A wooden garden bar is a brilliant addition to a UK garden, but our autumn and winter weather is hard on timber. Rain, frost, damp and fallen leaves can all take a toll on untreated wood. The good news is that a little preparation in October helps your bar look good for years. Here's a practical, step-by-step guide.

Why October Is the Time to Act

Wood absorbs moisture, then expands and contracts as temperatures change. Treating your bar before the wettest months helps protect the surface and keeps the finish looking fresh. Doing it now, while there are still dry days, gives paint and stain time to cure properly.

Step 1: Pick a Dry Day and Clear the Bar

Check the forecast for a couple of dry days. Remove bottles, accessories and decorations, and move the bar to a sheltered spot if you can.

Step 2: Clean the Timber

  • Brush off dirt, cobwebs and leaves.
  • Wash with warm water and a mild soap, then rinse and allow to dry fully.
  • Lightly sand any rough patches or areas where the old finish has worn away.

Step 3: Apply Paint, Stain or Oil

Choose a finish designed for outdoor timber. Our timber paint and stain (all colours, from £5) is made to refresh and colour wooden bars, and you can browse the full Timber Stain & Paint for Wooden Bars collection. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin for coats and drying times.

Tip: Pay extra attention to the end grain and the bottom edges of legs, as these soak up moisture fastest.

Step 4: Raise the Bar Off Wet Ground

Standing water is the enemy of timber. If your bar sits on grass or soil, place it on decking, paving slabs or patio stones, or use pads under the feet so air can circulate underneath.

Step 5: Cover It When You're Not Using It

A breathable, weatherproof furniture cover or tarpaulin protects the top surface from rain and frost. Avoid fully sealed plastic that traps condensation, and leave a little airflow around the sides.

Step 6: Move Accessories Indoors

Store removable items such as the LED bar sign, bar shelves and coasters in a dry shed or garage.

Step 7: Check It Through Winter

Every few weeks, brush off leaves and debris, wipe away damp and look for any areas where the finish is wearing thin. A quick touch-up is much easier than a full restoration.
